Dear Students and Parents/Guardians:

Welcome to 6th grade World History Class. I embrace you to the United Middle School “Maverick” Community and I’m excited about the opportunity to get to know you. I’m looking forward to a happy and productive school year. My philosophy is that by working together, students, parents/guardians and teacher, all students can and will excel to the best of their abilities.

Throughout the course of the academic year, we will study various aspects of culture, geography, history, economics, government, civics, political science and social study skills.  Your student will learn through reading, writing and a variety of interactive methods that include oral interviews, role-playing, discussion groups, and the personal experiences of their peers and others.  World History’s topics include the world’s people, places, and environments with historical emphasis on Asia, Europe, the Americas, Africa and the Middle East.

Materials that will be used daily are the following:

  • Post-It Notes (1 pack)
  • Pens(Black/ Blue & Red
  • Glue or glue sticks
  • Composite Journal
  • Pair of scissors
  • Markers
  • 2 Boxes of tissue
  • High Lighters
  • Crayons/ Color Pencils
  • Personal stapler

All students are required to be in class on time and be prepared with all necessary materials including but not limited to paper, pen, pencils and any due assignments. I will be setting up a schedule of lessons, activities, assignments and test dates; you will have access to the class web site by logging on to UMS web site at http://ums.unitedisd.org. Click on TOOLS & Staff Directory, located on the left hand side of the page, then click on teacher’s name, and click Profile and select class.

My previous experiences have made me a firm believer that a good education is the key to success for all students. As a teacher, I hope to motivate students in finding their inner strengths and abilities to realize what truly inspires them.  I aim at providing a learning environment to help them realize how important education is in the preparation for all to achieve success in future endeavors set before them.  Studies show that parental involvement in a child’s education is one of the strongest indicators of student achievement. We hope you will make it a priority this year to attend as many school-sponsored events as possible.

If you have any questions or concerns or if you would like to visit our classroom, schedule a conference you can contact me at (956) 473-7344, or you can e-mail me at:  sbriseno1@uisd.net  The best times to reach me is 2:30-4:00.

Computer Use:   Enrichment resources will be available within the computer lab through the use of UISD approved website activities.  Students will explore these educational websites that will enrich lessons throughout the year. Lessons, assignments, reviews, projects, and examination announcements will be posted on my class website at: http://ums.unitedisd.org

Tests, Projects, and Assignments:

Students will have a minimum of four tests each six weeks. Tests grades may be based on projects or an examination document. Work must be submitted on assigned date. Late work will get a penalized deduction of 10 points per each day with the maximum of three days. After the third day maximum grade received will be a 50.  Absent students are responsible to ask teacher for any missed assignments.  Most assignments/projects can be done at home if internet is available. Otherwise, the school computer lab will be available before school begins and afterschool until 4:30. If more time is needed, I will work with you.
