United Middle School
Welcome to 6th grade World History Class and to United Middle School, home of the “Mavericks”. I’m excited about the opportunity to get to know you and I’m looking forward to a happy and productive school year. My philosophy is that by working together, we should exceed all expectations and goals.
Throughout the course of the academic year, we will study various aspects of culture, geography, history, economics, government, citizenship, political science and social studies skills. Your student will learn through reading, writing, and a variety of interactive methods that include oral interviews, role-playing, discussion groups, and the personal experiences of their peers and others. World History’s topics include the world’s people, places, and environments with historical emphasis on Asia, Europe, North America, South America, Africa, and the Middle East.
Additional materials that will be used daily are the following:
All students are required to be in class on time and be prepared with all necessary materials including but not limited to paper, pen, pencils and any due assignments. I will be setting up a schedule of lessons, activities, assignments and test dates; you will have access to the class web site by logging on to UMS web site at http://ums.uisd.net Click on Faculty & Staff located on the left hand side of the page. Then click on teachers and look for my name. Finally click World History under Classes taught.
My previous experiences have made me a firm believer that a good education is the key to success for all students. As a teacher, I hope to motivate students in finding their inner strengths and abilities to realize how important education is in the preparation for all to achieve success in future endeavors set before them. Studies show that parental involvement in a child’s education is one of the strongest indicators of student achievement. We hope you will make it a priority this year to attend as many school-sponsored events as possible.
If you have any questions, concerns, or if you would like to visit our classroom, schedule a conference. You can contact me at (956) 473-7349, or you can e-mail me at: DMART59@uisd.net. The best time to reach me is from 2:35 p.m.- 3:30 p.m.
Computer Use: Enrichment resources will be available within the computer lab through the use of UISD approved website activities. Students will explore these educational websites that will enrich lessons throughout the year. Lessons, assignments, reviews, projects, and examination announcements will be posted on my class website and on my Remind.
Tests, Projects, and Assignments:
Students will have a minimum of four tests each six weeks. Tests grades may be based on projects or an examination document. A minimum of 2 daily grades will be collected each week. Late work will automatically get a maximum grade of 70% (based on 100% completion with zero errors). Work turned in more than 2 days late will automatically recieve a 50% grade, and work turned in more than 3 days late will not be accepted and will automatically recieve a 0% grade. Absent students are responsible to ask teacher for any missed assignments. Most assignments and projects can be done at home if internet is available. If more time is needed, I will work with you. Grading policy is on seperate page.
Classroom Rules: Students will follow PBIS MAVS Classroom Expectations. Rules are on seperate page.
Once again, welcome to 6th grade World History Class. Let’s work together to make this the best year ever!
