8th Grade U.S. History Syllabus

Course Objectives:

The goal of this class is to enable students to understand the development of the United States by examining connections to the past in order to prepare for the future as participating members of a democratic society. Students will examine political, economic, geographical, technological, and social developments of the United States from Exploration period through Reconstruction.  This course will also focus on preparing the student with the knowledge and skills necessary to master the STAAR exam in the Spring. 

Grading Policy:

  • Classwork: 40%
  • Tests,Quizzes, & Projects: 50%
  • Homework/Participation: 10%

Test/Quizzes:

  • Re-Testing will be available for one week after the score is reported to those who earn below a 70. The maximum a re-test can earn is a 70.
  • All re-test have to be completed before or after school or at a arranged time with the teacher.

Attendance:

Attendance is taken daily. Being present is class is crucial since we will be covering a variety of information during our classes.

Absences and Missing Work:

  • When absent from class, excused or unexcused absence, the student has the number of days they were absent to complete the missing assignments or tests.
  • Ex: absent 2 days, they have two days to complete assignments
  • It is the responsibility of the student to pick up their missing work from the “Absent Work Bin.”
  • Any Tests that were missed will have to be completed

Tardies: The school tardy policy will be strictly enforced in the classroom.

Rules:

  • Be on time, on task, & prepared to learn everyday
  • Respect yourself, the teacher, the classroom, and other students.
  • Be Responsible for your own learning
  • Keep all personal electronics AWAY. School policy enforced
  • Make sure your language is appropriate for school.
  • Clean up after yourself and value other’s property.

Materials for the Classroom:

  • A composition notebook
  • Pencils
  •  Glue sticks
  • Colored pencils or crayons
  • Scissors
  • Tissues/ Hand-Sanitizer
  • Pens
  • Highlighters
  • Notebook Tabs 

Remind:

Students and Parents can sign up to receive class alerts on Remind. Each class period will have a special code & it serves as a way for the teacher to communicate about upcoming events and homework assignments that our class will be completing. Depending on your class: Text the following code to 81010 or add to the app.
